Dahshein Karon Perry, 23, of Boston, and Yasser Teixeira Mendonca, of Mount Vernon, face multiple charges that stem from the theft early Monday morning, Nov. 27.
Wellesley police began looking for the duo after receiving an alarm from a mailbox outside the Grove Street post office around 2:30 a.m.
An officer who went to do a security check of the mailboxes at the Wellesley Hills post office spotted a red sedan run a red light on Washington Street at State Street. The officer tried to make a traffic stop, but the car sped through red lights at Cliff Road and Worcester Street.
Wellesley police alerted Newton officers that they were chasing the car into Newton and asked for assistance, authorities said.
A Newton officer tried to stop the car near Hammond Pond Parkway, but the driver sped away towards Brookline, where he crashed on Newton Street shortly after.
Newton police arrested Perry and Teixeira Mendonca after a short foot chase.
"Over a thousand pieces of stolen mail were recovered," police said after an investigation of the car.
After appearing at the Newton District Court on Monday, the men were bailed out.
Perry and Teixeira Mendonca have been charged with:
- Receiving Stolen Property
- Failure to Stop for Police
- Breaking into a Depository
- Larceny Over $250
Teixeira Mendonca was later released on $7,500 bail, while Perry was held on $5,000 bail.
Both were set to appear at Dedham District Court on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
